***Earth Soul-Friend Arts Gatherings***

A Seasonal Creative Arts Vigil-Keeping Space

Please join this virtual community of creative people who gather at the start of each new season to share creative-arts offerings that express love and concern for Earth and humanity. All participants are invited to bring a poem, song, dance, image, or hand-made artifact that they have created, or are deeply nourished by. We take turns briefly sharing what we have brought within a community ritual to help us keep vigil for the Earth in this challenging era of collective grief and possibility. Gatherings occur on the last Sunday in March, June, September, and December from 3-5 ET, virtually. RSVP to receive a Zoom link by contacting Liza at lizahyatt@gmail.com.

2024-2025 dates:

Course Outline:

Morning Session:  Acknowledging the Wounds to Creativity and Imagination

In this session, we highlight the need for authentic creativity, and a respectful curiosity for the wisdom within primary imagination, as humanity navigates the challenges that lie ahead in our current era.  We discuss the ways in which our society has trivialized and commodified imagination. We identify contemplative perspectives that offer healing to the four core wounds  (shame, objectification, conformity, and productivity) impairing our creative lives. We begin to develop skills for companioning spiritual seekers as they identify these core wounds and reclaim their authentic creativity. We also acknowledge how repairing our creative lives is essential to the health of the natural world. The Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC) and the concept of poiesis will be introduced as helpful frameworks to guide art-based spiritual companionship and direction.

Afternoon Session: Practicing Poiesis, Crossing Thresholds to Contemplative Creativity

In this session, we learn ways to help spiritual seekers shift their creative process from ego-driven efforts to produce “good art” toward contemplative creativity which focuses on process and flow, cultivating receptivity, authentic experience, healing, and compassion. We take time to more deeply engage in experiential practices informed by poiesis and the Expressive Therapies Continuum, which were introduced in the morning session.

As My Old Maps Are Erased: Midlife’s Poetry

November 12, 2023 at 3-4:30pm ET

IMG-8273

Liza Hyatt’s new book of poetry, As My Old Maps Are Erased honors the spiritual pilgrimage that a woman’s midlife journey offers. These poems show a woman letting go while becoming more fully human, feeling her way blindly over shifting terrain, surrendering during unexpected descents, and swimming into deeper and deeper seas. Written as both a chronological account of the poet’s life with her teen-aged daughter, and as a voyager’s log of passage through liminal, mythic terrain, the poet describes the specific details of her life to reveal profound breakthroughs as soul works to disassemble the too-small-self of the first half of life. Falling stars, rain-swollen creeks, hand-me-down skirts, gray hair, piles of leaves, and emptied closets become the source of spiritual revelation. Midlife is seen as a midwife assisting a difficult birth, teaching lessons of surrender. These poems inspire courage to leave behind familiar shores and our old, habitual, fading maps.

Following Hyatt’s reading, she will guide participants into writing their own poetry or creative non-fiction exploring the spiritual dimensions of their own personal midlife experiences.
